Dr. Baxter Willis is a Professor of Surgery, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, Canada. He is on the Active Staff in the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa. Dr. Willis obtained his fellowship in pediatric orthopaedics in 1977 at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada with Dr. Robert Salter. Following completion of his fellowship, he became the first full-time pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at Western University in London, Ontario, Canada.
He was recruited to New Orleans, Louisiana in 1994 as the G. Dean MacEwen Professor of Pediatric Orthopaedics at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and Head of Orthopaedic Surgery at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans, a position he held until 2004.
In 2004, Dr. Willis returned to Canada as Chief of Surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), a position he held until 2015. He was Interim Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at CHEO from 2015 until 2017 and he remains on the Active Staff at CHEO.
He had the honour of being President of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) in 2008. His interests include pediatric hip disorders, limb and foot deformities and trauma. He maintains a passion for education of residents and fellows in all aspects of pediatric orthopaedics, both locally, regionally and internationally.
